This ruling is especially unfortunate in the context of Israel’s wider law governing marriage. In Israel, as I understand it, a marriage can only be obtained through one of the recognized religious institutions of the state. Thus, by denying Messianic Jews any recognition of their religion, the rabbinical court is limiting Messianic Jews’ access to the institution of marriage at all. Louis, am I understanding this rightly? What options does this couple now have if they want to get married?
